It's not often that you get a chance to see some of the leading sportsmen in the world competing on your doorstep but by this time next week some of them will be battling the renowned Baltray links course.
The countdown to the Irish open has started and with the course only 25 minutes drive from Smarmore Castle so we are an ideal base for anyone who plans to attend the event.
When the Open was held there a few years ago we went along and were astounded by just how much at planning goes into such an event. Parking was set up a fair distance from the course but there was shuttle bus constantly running to and from the car parks. Once on the course you were free to go anywhere. There were grandstands set up at key holes but most people seemed to wander around the course so that the got a feel for everything or because they wanted to follow their favorite players.
The best part for me was looking at the players practicing before they went out on their rounds. Spectators could get really close to this area and you could see the players try out the shots they expected to have to play during their round or go through their individual warm up routine.
