Summer at the castle

It's been a while since our last post so I would just like to bring you up to date with all that is happening here at the castle. In March we had to close our leisure club after nearly 14 years in business however the accommodation here in the castle is still going strong.

This year we have welcomed guests from nearly every continent and look forward to seeing a few more before the end of the summer. We introduces a special offer of 75 Euros per person for a two night stay (including breakfast) in Spring and have decided to extend it throughout the summer.

Unfortunately our leisure club is closed at the moment. We regret that guests staying at the castle will not have access to the pool and gym during their stay.

Award winning harpist to play at Smarmore Castle

The castle will host a recital by award winning harpist Anne-marie O'Farrel on Saturday November 13th. The performance will take place in the Blue room at 3pm and form part of Ardee's Baroque festival. Anne-marie will perform a programme of music that would have been performed in the 18th Century Great Houses or Castles of Ireland.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann

The 60th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is taking place in Cavan until August 22th. The event is the biggest celebration of Irish traditional culture taking place in the country this year. It attracts visitors, musicians and heritage lovers from every corner of the world to celbrate Irish music, song and dance. This is the first time that the Fleadh has been held there since since 1954. Full details can be found on the Fleadh website

Smarmore Castle is one of Ireland's 20 unforgettable castles according to The Times

Smarmore Castle was featured as one of the top 20 unforgettable castles in Ireland in last Saturday's edition of the Times Travel section (July 31st).

Smarmore came in at number eighteen in the listing compiled by the prestigious London newspaper. In the article Georgina Wilson wrote "you don't have to travel far to live like a king. Ireland is full of romantic places to stay." She went on "Smarmore Castle is in a county steeped in history, myths and legends. It is close to Slane Castle and Kells Heritage Centre, and with only five bedrooms it offers a more intimate experience. Built in 1320, the castle was owned by one family until the 1980s. Now a boutique hotel, it features an Italian restaurant, gym, pool, sauna, steam room and massage centre. There is no bar but guests may bring their own alcohol"

Turfman Festival starts today

The 2nd Turfman Festival starts today (Friday July 30) in Ardee with a number of events including a golf competition, a cookery exhibition and the opening of a Floral Festival in St Mary’s Church to celebrate 40th anniversary of Ardee Flower Club.

At 9 pm all the pubs in town will take part in a simultaneously Pub Quiz. Full details can be downloaded from the festival brochure

Vintage Day at Ballapousta this Sunday

THE Ashville Vintage Club is holding a working vintage day this Sunday 1 August at Ballapousta.

Attractions include threshing, vintage tractor and car display, sheep racing, dog show, home baking and refreshments, live music, children's entertainment, novelty events and much more.

Admission for adults is 10 Euros, children free of charge. Car par where horse ploughing, tractor ploughing, binding, vintage combining and baling will be demonstrated.

Give your canine friend a wash, cut and blowdry before he/she appears in the dog show where prizes will be awarded for the nicest pooch. There will be plenty more to keep the children entertained with bouncy castles, bucking bull, face painting, animal farm and other novelty events.

There will be live music aplenty with something to suit all tastes while those who feel the urge to dance can thread the boards if the mood takes them.

The food stall plays a huge role on a day like this as it is a place to congregate and chat as you watch the activities over a cup of tea. Home baking-cooking will be the order of the day but chips and ice-cream will also be available.

Remember all proceeds will be donated to a good cause.

Ardee Turfman Festival 2010

Ardee town will be buzzing over the August bank holiday weekend as the annual Turfman festival gets in full swing. The festival starts on Friday night (July 30^th) and has a varied programme of events ranging from sport to culture. It gets its name from the famous Irish folk song “the Turfman from Ardee”.

If you are interested in being active you might consider taking part in a 10km road race/fun run around the town or a treasure hunt. Other sporting related events include a Gaelic seven-a-side blitz, a soccer blitz, a charity rugby match, martial arts and athletics.

Less active options include a Farmers' Market, an art exhibit, a cookery demonstration, a display by Dundalk military barracks, a busking competition, Battle of the Bands and pub quizzes. If you bring your family to stay at Smarmore Castle over the course of festival week you can avail of a great free offer for children under 12.

The summer festival season is in full swing and this weekend Clogherhead holds three days of events in the village, on the beach and in the sea. The schedule of events has a fun theme running through it with plenty to keep all members of the family entertained - everything from Tall ships at the pier to the final of the Prawn Idol talent show.
Cloghjerhead is only 45 minutes drive from Smarmore Castle so could be easily fitted into your schedule if you are staying here at the weekend.

Daylight robbery denies Louth victory

By now everyone knows what happened on Sunday. A simple scoreline of Meath 1-12 Louth 1-10 does not even hint at the full story.

Louth's long wait for a Leinster title goes on thanks to referee Martin Sludden failing to spot Joe Sheridan's try in the final moments of the match. Louth's manager Peter Fitzpatrick, summed up the feeling of a county when he said "I honestly thought he (the ref) was Dick Turpin without a mask. It was pure daylight robbery"

The chaos that ensued afterwards hasn't abated. Will there/won't there be a replay? Still no word but as time goes on it seems less likely. The match has made it onto all the news programmes since Sunday and was even raised in the Seanad today. The fairest and most logical outcome is to replay the match but as usual things get very complicated very quickly when administrators, the media, pundits and other vested interests get involved. For once it would be good if the spirit of the sport took precedent over all the spin and posturing

Flags wars

We've had mixed reaction to the decision to put flags from both counties outside the leisure club entrance.

We 're in Louth but the border with Meath is only metres from here and many of our members are supporting the Royals. It's the same in Ardee. The vast majority of flags and bunting are red and white but there is also a significant amount to green and yellow to be seen.

We're firmly supporting Louth and the size of the flags show where our allegiances lie.

Florida Irish recommend Smarmore Castle

We were delighted to receive an e-mail from Tim Lunney, the Executive Director of the Florida Irish Heritage Center who visited the castle in 2004 with some of his family.
In a post headed "planning a trip to Ireland" Tim writes a glowing report of his stay here.
Tim finishes a very extensive description of the the castle by saying

"This is not a paid advertisement. It is an enthusiastic personal testimonial, based upon my own family’s wonderful stay at historic Smarmore Castle. I can’t think of enough nice things to say about the Castle, it’s facilities, or our hosts, the Mullen Family."

The Florida Irish Heritage Center's website is well worth checking out. We usually think of New York, Chicago and Boston as the main areas with strong Irish connections in the USA but according to the centre one in 9 Floridians claim Irish roots - that's over 2 million people.

Dundalk march on in Europe

Dundalk beat CS Grevenmacher from Luxembourg 2-1 in the 2nd leg of their UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round last night at Oriel Park. Dundalk won the tie 5-4 on aggregrate and now face PFC Levski Sofia in the next round on Thursday July 15th. The large home crowd were put at ease early on as Dundalk scored twice in the opening 20 minutes through Neale Fenn and man of the match Faz Kuduzovic. Grevenmacher scored a deserved consolation goal in injury time but by then Dundalk should have added to the two goal tally.

The management and team should now be given time to concentrate on the trip to Bulgaria next Thursday. Levski Sofia is a serious team with several internationals. Before that Dundalk must take on Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght on Sunday. It's a game that neither Dundalk or Rovers need or want as both have important European ties looming. Many Dundalk supporters would also like to be in Croke Park for the Leinster final.

How can an organisation like the FAI that purports to want Irish teams to succeed in Europe force Dundalk & Rovers to play so close to such important games? It seems that the needs of supporters and teams must not interfere with the FAI's admin. It's yet another example of how out of touch the FAI is with reality in the game.

Football fever hits Ardee

The world cup has taken a back seat in county Louth because the county's footballers have reached their first GAA Leinster football final in 50 years. They defeated Westmeath last Sunday and now face neighbours at Croke Park on July 11th.

Red and white flags have sprung up everywhere and there is a real feel factor in Ardee following the teams performance.

To celebrate the series of great performances we are giving free B&B to children under 12 who stay as part of a family group this summer. Our offer will run for as long as Louth's footballers remain in the championship. We dearly hope that we can keep it open until the end of September.

Great performance of our fit again 4

Gerry Kelly’s column in some of this weeks local papers highlighted the great performance of our four “get fit again in 2010″ volunteers.The rather banal headline “King Peter beats target” hid the story of Margaret, Mary, Peter and Jack who all succeeded in losing weight and improving their fitness levels over the 10 weeks of the challenge. Peter managed to lose almost 3 stone by exercising regularly and cutting out all the junk food from his life.
We will be publishing full details f how he did it on our leisure club blog in the next few days.

LMFM four get results

After 10 weeks of exercise and dedicated training our four volunteers from the LMFM afternoon show had their final weigh in this afternoon. Mary, Peter and Margaret were weighed by Gareth in the LMFM studio while Jack had his on Wednesday. We were delighted that everyone lost weight and Peter managed to lose an impressive 3 stone.

Gerry Kelly interviewed the participants and Gareth live on air. Everyone said that they were feeling better after the experience and wanted to keep on working on their fitness levels.

Get fit volunteers on LMFM radio on Good Friday

Our "get fit again in 2010 campaign" in conjunction with LM's Late Lunch show finishes tomorrow (April 2nd) when our four intrepid volunteers, Peter, Mary, Margaret and Jack will be heading into the LMFM studios to be weighed and measured by Gareth live on the air.

The aim of the campaign was to see if four normal people could improve their general fitness levels and lose weight by following a properly planned fitness training programme under the supervision of the staff here at Smarmore Castle Leisure Club.

So far the results have been very good with everyone making substantially progress towards their goals of getting fit and getting their weight under control.

Circuit of Ireland Rally

The annual circuit of Ireland rally starts at 11am on Easter Saturday (April 3rd) in Dundalk. It then winds it way across Down, Monaghan and Armagh before finishing in Newry on Easter Sunday. 135 competitors are expected to take part in the 15 stage event. The event is one of the highlights of the Irish rally season and is expected to attract fans from every part of Ireland.

The roads around Smarmore Castle formed part of the route a number of years ago. However the castle could be an ideal base to stay for anyone travelling from the South who is looking for accommodation near Dundalk. It takes less than 30 minutes to drive from here to the centre of Dundalk.

We are very pleased to be hosting the "begin again in 2010" campaign being run by LMFM's late lunch programme. Last week the show's presenters Gerry Kelly and Deirdre Hurley invited listeners to put a case for why they should get an opportunity to join our leisure club and get expert advice from our fitness team on how they can lose weight and get into shape over the next 10 weeks.

The four volunteers- Mary, Margaret,Peter and Jack came along to the club last night to have their first weigh-in and measurement under the watchful eye of Gerry from the show who recored all the action and broadcast it on today's show.
Gareth carried out all the weighing and measuring and gave some valuable advice and comments on what everyone should do next to meet their goals.

It's very brave of Mary, Margaret,Peter and Jack to do this challenge with everyone listening to their progress. Usually your fitness programme is a thing between you and your instructor. Having met everyone last night though I think that they will be successful as they all have their own motivations to get fitter and lose some weight. Our team are looking forward to the challenge. We always say that we can help people to get fit so this is a chance to show that we can get results for members while the ears of the north-east listen on. Gareth got things off to an excellent start last night and has already booked in three of the participants in for a full fitness assessment and induction session in the gym.

Great start to new season

We were glad to welcome back some of our guests from last year who travelled from Scotland, Switzerland, Denmark, Holland and Ireland to get here.

New Weekly Weigh in

We are glad to report that all our new year events in the leisure club will go ahead as planned starting with aqua aerobics in the morning (January 13th). In addition we are introducing a brand new initiative - a weekly weigh-in. This will complement all our existing events and will give everyone a chance to gauge how their fitness programmes are progressing. It will start with a supervised weigh-in and measurement by one of our team. Every week there will be another weigh in with a full measurement every month.

The weigh ins will be held at the following times:
Tuesday Evenings from 8.15pm to 8.45pm
Wednesday Mornings after Aqua Aerobics
Friday Evenings from 8.15 pm to 8.45 pm

Don’t worry if these times don’t suit, you can arrange a more convenient time with one of our Gym Instructors.

Snow gone (for now)

The weather has taken another turn and the snow has almost all been washed away. Conditions on the road and around the castle are still slippy so take care if you are planning to visit. Hopefully the snow won't return but the forecasts from the met service are quite vague.

Beating the freeze

The leisure club is open despite the arctic weather conditions sweeping the country at the moment. The roads around us have been in a very poor condition but we have kept the club open despite the snow and frost. Our members who have braved the weather have been able to keep their fitness and relaxation regimes going and we are grateful for the dedication our staff have shown to get here. The weather forecasts for the next week or so are bad but we are hopeful that we can kick off our 2010 programme on time. Here are some of the events that will be happening over the next few weeks:

Aqua Aerobics - re-commencing on Wednesday morning Jan. 13th at 10.30 am

Swimming Lessons - beginning on Thursday Jan. 14th. Please hand your name in at reception if you would like to take parts. There will be both adult and children classes.

Men’s Pool Training - Monday Jan. 18th at 7.30 pm

Don't forget to begin the New Year with a fresh start and book your assessment for the gym.

If weather conditions persist or deteriorate then we may have to reschedule the events to a time that is more convenient for everyone.

Fitness is not a luxury

At this time of year many people think about gym membership as a way to kick start their new year's resolutions and get back into shape after the excesses of the Christmas and New Year holidays. There was a very interesting article in the Irish Independent yesterday by Damien Maher arguing the case that the benefits of joining a gym far outweigh the costs involved.

The cost of fitness issue came to a head in the Dail on the eve of the budget when some politicians felt that it was a luxury to hire a gym instructor for Leinster House in the light of the country's financial meltdown.

The article made the point that our TDs should give the rest of the country a lead and improve their fitness by employing the instructor. If they could become healthier why couldn't everyone else? The author pointed out that people feel better physically and mentally when they exercise and that many health problems ranging from cardio-vascular disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer can be reduced by even small improvements in fitness. He also highlighted how exercise could address the growing problem of obesity.

Everyone here at the castle would like to wish all our guests, visitors and anyone who reads this blog a very happy New Year.

Our accommodation is closed until January 8th so that we get a little bit of "family time" ourselves. The leisure club is open again on Saturday though.

We hope that the coming year will be a good one for everyone. 2009 was difficult for the Irish economy and our business felt the downturn as much as everyone else. There are signs that things may be settling down as articles in the papers yesterday reported that Irish consumer confidence rose in December. It had been rising for the previous two months in the USA. It seems that people are getting used to the new financial situation and are availing of the good value around in shops, restaurants and other outlets. We have adjusted our rates downwards to make a stay here even better value for money but I can assure you that we won't be skimping on quality.

Hopefully we might get a chance to welcome you here sometime in 2010.

In the meantime please have a very Happy New Year.

North Pole Challenge Results

Our North Pole challenge finished last week and we would like to congratulate Lisa Farrelly who won the ladies category and Pat Connolly who took the honours in the male section. Both were worthy winners who showed great dedication throughout the six weeks of the competition.

They both received a voucher for dinner for two in La Cucina restaurant in the castle courtyard as their prize. We would like to thank Lucio, Rossano and Tita in La Cucina for sponsoring this prize. All the competitors who finished the challenge received a special medal to mark their achievement. Check the full results here.

We are grateful to John McKeown from Lookaroundireland.com, The Ireland Travel Guide, for this article which captures the wonder of Newgrange as the solstice approaches.

It is the first bleak days of December 2009 in Ireland. The country has endured dreadful hardship from flooding in recent weeks; the economic indicators are depressing as the country awaits the most horrific Budget ever to be delivered by any Finance Minister and the days are getting shorter and shorter. Darkness dominates the Irish landscape as we approach the shortest day of the year. It is easy to be solemn and negative in our thinking.

But I am happy! For December brings to Ireland the Winter Solstice at Newgrange in County Meath - one of the great combined natural/man-made events of the world brought to us by the genius and the ghosts of the Neolithic Age, some 5000 years ago. It is an awesome sight to behold.

This wonderful event takes place for a few days around the winter solstice each year, when the passage and chamber of the 5000 year old monument are illuminated by the winter solstice sunrise. A shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. The dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn from the 19th to the 23rd of December. It comes about as a result of a miraculous and enduringly complex mathematical equation produced by a people who lacked the computers we have to today. To experience it sends a shiver down my back as I think of how advanced our forefathers of five millennia ago were.

I haven’t missed one for years, dignitaries, politicians and academics always have priority to be inside the chamber for the event but every September a lottery is held for those interested in being inside on the actual day. I would advise anybody has given up hopes winning this lottery to consider coming to Newgrange and watch from the outside either on the day or the days immediately before or after the 21st December. If you are prepared to be there early, you will have every opportunity of seeing it in all its splendour. The atmosphere is eerie as the sun rises slowly and lights up the Boyne Valley, it is a glorious event. You can imagine how this must have felt in Neolithic times!

After the dignitaries are gone you get the chance to go inside the chamber and they re create the event. I wonder how this must have felt in Neolithic times!

And then, minute by minute, the days get longer and our spirits soar above the darkness. Our hopes are high once again for a great New Year.

Family night

It is always a fun occasion with plenty of activities for our junior members.

It is divided into two sessions - ages 4 to 7 yrs from 6.45 pm to 7.45 pm with the older children 8 to 16 from 7.45 pm to 8.45 pm

Santa stopped the traffic in Ardee last Friday evening when he turned on the Christmas lights. It's the clearest sign yet that Christmas is coming.

There is no turning back now. Christmas songs have been playing in the shops for the past two weeks, the town has its decorations up and I still haven't drawn up a Christmas present list (let alone bought anything yet).

It's only a matter of time before I spot a Christmas tree in someone's house.

If the prospect of all the hustle, bustle and hassle of the next three weeks or so fills you with dread then think about one of the simpler mysteries of life - the winter solstice at Newgrange.

Recital

Saturday's recital by Redmond O Toole was a great success here at the castle. The event was a sell-out and described by many as one of the highlights of the Baroque Festival. The appreciative audience of 40 people were enchanted by Redmond's guitar playing. Many had not encountered the instrument in this type of setting or playing Baroque music before.

The event started at 2.30pm as the audience gathered in the castle's dining room for a drinks reception. Shortly after 3 pm everyone moved to the Blue Room where Redmond kept them entertained for the following 60 minutes or so. The audience were seated in a semi-circle around Redmond with no one being more than 10 feet away from him. Redmond brought the whole audience into the world of baroque music by explaining the history of the guitar and its association with this type of music.

We were delighted to be asked to host the recital and hope that everyone who attended had an enjoyable time.

We would like to thank Brian, Mary and the whole team from Louth County Council for putting the event together. We would also like to thank Niamh, Eileen, Karina and Maggie for running the drinks and food reception so smoothly, and Peter and Lorna for keeping the car parking flowing smoothly.

Redmond O Toole recital

Redmond O Toole’s recital in the Blue Room here at Smarmore Castle on Saturday 14th is one of the most anticipated events of the festival as Redmond is one of the most innovative and exciting young guitarists in Europe.

He plays an 8-string “Brahms Guitar” in the cello position, connected to a special resonating box. Recent engagements have seen Redmond tour Spain as a special guest with the Chieftains, a BBC recording as soloist with the BBC Ulster Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Montgomery and a performance with the acclaimed Dutch soprano Charlotte Riedjik at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry.

He performs regularly with the Chieftains and in duo with violinist Elizabeth Cooney.

Dundalk lose to Rovers in classic encounter

Dundalk succumbed to two late goals from Shamrock Rovers in a thrilling encounter at Oriel Park last night. Both teams had periods when they had the upper hand and Dundalk will count themselves unlucky to have lost. Dundalk had fought back on two occasions to level things. The scoreline of 4-2 to Rovers does not tell the full story of the match as it was only in the last few minutes that Rovers pulled away and made the win secure. The difference between the sides was the superior finishing by Rovers. Gary Twigg knocked in a very taken poacher's goal with five minutes to go and Dessie Baker thumped home a free kick from outside the box as the match moved into stoppage time.

The Forgotten Irish Project

The power of a recent TV3 documentary about the plight of Irish people who emigrated to the UK in the 40s and 50s but are now experiencing very hard times moved John McKeown the owner of lookaroundireand.com to set up a fund to try and raise money for charities who are helping these forgotten Irish. Swimming lessons starting next week

We are pleased to announce that our group swimming lessons for adults and children will begin next Thursday October 29th. The children's lessons will run from 4 pm to 5.15pm while adult lessons will begin at 7.15 pm.

These lessons will run for a total of six weeks. During the lessons part of the pool will be closed. However the other part of the pool as well as the jacuzzi, steam room and sauna can be used as normal.

Week to go until TV debut

Only a week to go until the castle appears on TV. The 7th episode of At your service goes on air tonight at 8.30 pm so we will be watching with interest to see what happens. The programme is only around 20 minutes long so we wonder what parts get featured. During the filming here the crew covered our float in the Saint Patrick's day parade in Ardee so hopefully that will make the final show.

Smarmore Castle appearing on RTE’s “At your Service” show

On Sunday October 25th at 8.30 pm Smarmore Castle and Leisure Club will be featured on RTÉ 1’s “At your Service” programme. In this show Francis and John Brennan who operate the five star Park Hotel in Kenmare visit B&Bs, small hotels and other operators in the hospitality business around Ireland to analyse and suggest solutions to problems they are encountering.

We applied for the show because we felt it would be an opportunity to showcase what we offer at Smarmore Castle and pick up some valuable advice from two of the most successful hoteliers in the industry. The Brennans’ first visit was on Saint Patrick’s Day. They stayed for two days and made a number of suggestions about how we could improve the performance of our leisure club and accommodation businesses. They suggested that we should think bigger so over the summer we put on a craft event, redecorated part of the castle’s entrance hall and held a jamboree for the younger members of the club.

We have not seen the final show yet so don’t know what exactly will be featured or how we will be portrayed. The Brennans were friendly and businesslike throughout and do have a genuine interest in helping people. One of the funniest things that happened was when Francis decided to take a “hands on” approach while we were doing a bit of demolition. He is normally renowned for his dapper appearance but spent that afternoon in his overalls and hard hat, driving a dumper around the courtyard.

Redmond O Toole to perform at Smarmore Castle

On Saturday November 14th Irish classical guitarist, Redmond O’ Toole will be performing at Smarmore Castle. The concert is part of the annual Ardee Baroque Music Festival. The concert will take place in the castle’s decorative Blue room and is limited to an audience of forty. O’ Toole is renowned for playing the unusual 8 string Brahm’s Guitar so this will be the first time that this instrument has featured in the festival programme.

RTE panel scupper Trap's joy

Anyone tuning into RTE's panel after the 2-2 draw with Italy last night would have been forgiven for thinking that Ireland had lost or that some catastrophe had struck the nation. The mood from Dunphy, Giles and Souness was depressing to say the least. Dunphy spoke about how 'real' football fans would be crying across the country as they watched Ireland's team fail to keep the ball or do anything constructive. "Andy Reid would make such a difference" they said. That's probably true. But Trap was positively apoplectic in the post match interview when Tony O Donoghue asked whether Reid would make an appearance for the suspended Whelan on Wednesday.

It's great that we have panelist who are willing to say what they think unlike their counterparts on other channels but maybe they miss the point sometimes. "Real" football fans like to win. Supporting a team is usually 90% disappointment and frustration and only 10% success and glory. We would all love Ireland to play like Brazil (or Italy) but there are not too many of this calibre of player knocking around the Irish squad at present. Trap has achieved so far what he was employed to do. He has got into the playoffs. Hopefully in two games time he will have achieved the prime objective and got us to the World Cup finals in South Africa. Andy Reid should be in the squad at least though.

Dull draw at foggy Oriel Park

Maybe it was the fog but Dundalk put in one of their worst performances of the season last night in a dull nil-nil draw with St. Pats. John Gill, the manager who fianlly steered Dundalk out of the 1st division twilight zone got a deserved ovation from the Dundalk crowd when he took his place in the Pats dugout but after that there was not much to cheer about. Both teams had spells when they had good possesion but goal mounth action was scarce. Michael McGowan and Ger Rowe were Dundalk's most creative players. Dundalk's best chance was created by McGowan early in the second half. His beautifully floted cross was completely missed by Darren Mansaram.

Alice’s Loft & Cottages, Doohamlet, Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan was the setting in early September were the current world record for Bog Snorkelling was smashed twice .The record with stood at 1:38 was broken firstly by Casey Squibb from Dorset, England who covered the 120 meter course in 1:33. Casey who was the Bride to be on her Hen party was just 1 second short on her first attempt of breaking the record and her determination on her second attempt carried her through. The world record was then broken again when Connor Murphy from Portadowm in Co. Armagh covered in course in 1:29.Both attempts were recorded and forwarded to the Guinness Book of Records where hopefully we will see the Irish Bog Snorkelling Championships being written into History. John Mc Keown of Lookaroundireland.com and co-organiser of the event was thrilled with the day and said “Having saw the world record broken twice was the icing on the cake for us and would like to commend both record breakers for their fantastic times. The Hen party from Dorset were great craic over the weekend and together with the great weather it made our first championships a fantastic success.”
Declan Connolly of Alice’s Loft & Cottages Self-Catering and co-organiser of the team was equally thrilled “After the success of today we are now planning next years event and hope to make it bigger and better”.

The snorkellers finished the day at Watters, Old coach Inn where the winners were presented with their trophies, certificates and prizes. Each competitor received a specially designed T-Shirt and a certificate with their time. The men’s and ladies winners each received a weekend for two at Smarmore Castle.

St. Mary’s hospital in Castleblayney was the local Charity supported on the day with a donation being made to the Lorgan Unit. The lads would like to thank all sponsors and everyone who helped made the first Irish Bog Snorkelling Championships a huge success.

Louth County Council and Scotch Hall will jointly host the Drogheda Food Festival on the 14th and 15th of August on the Waterfront at Scotch Hall with an additional special menu guide planned for the Sunday.

The event which takes place around 20 minutes from Smarmore Castle, aims to place attention on the variety of local food producers in the region as well as some of the wonderful food offers available in the restaurants across Drogheda.

On Wednesday I attended the launch of the Irish Bog Snorkelling Championships at Alice's Loft near Castleblaney.

The two organisers John and Declan took the plunge into the bog and showed the crowd what to expect on September 12th when the event takes place. So far over 40 entrants have put their names down for the event. More details at the event website.

The Oasis concert at Slane is making headlines today, two days after the event and for once the Gallagher brothers have nothing to do with the controversy. Phone-in shows have been inundated with angry concert-goers complaining about their difficulties getting in through the "Dublin entrance", perceptions of overcrowding and in particular severe delays getting back to Dublin on buses after the concert. Lord Henry Mountcharles promised a full investigation when he appeared on the RTE's Joe Duffy show and sounded genuinely concerned about the problems and the disappointment that the angry fans had experienced.

The music? No reports on the early bands but the Prodigy performed a very lively set from 7 to 8 pm which whipped the crowd into a frenzy. At about 8.20 Oasis took to the stage to a tumultuous reception. Over the next two hours they performed a mixture of songs from their latest studio album and back catalog. The biggest reception was by far for the old favorites as the fans sang along with gusto.

Bog Snorkelling

On September 12th the first ever bog snorkelling championship to be held in this region will be taking place at Alices Loft and Cottages Self Catering, Castleblaney Co. Monaghan. The event is being organised by Declan Connolly from Alice's Loft and John McKeown from LookaroundIreland. We worked with both of them on Fáilte Ireland’s Tourism Learning Network for Louth/Monaghan over the past couple years and are pleased to be associated with the event through sponsorship of some of the prizes.

Bog snorkelling is a sporting event that consists of competitors completing two consecutive lengths of a 60-yard (55 m) water filled trench cut through a peat bog, in the shortest time possible. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers, and complete the course without using conventional swimming strokes, relying on flipper power alone. Wet suits are not compulsory, but are usually worn.

DkIT wind turbine open June 14th

The Wind Turbine at DkIt will be open this Sunday, 14th of June, from 12 noon to 6pm and also on Monday from 12pm to 3pm as part of DkIT's collaboration in Global Wind Day. Centre for Renewable Energy guys will be on hand to answer any questions,
distribute information on large and small wind turbines and hats and
windmills for the kids.
